Grow Euphorbia characias in well drained, light soil in full sun; they resent winter wet. Mediterranean Spurge is hardy to -10°C (14°F) and is best grown in a sheltered position. Alternatively grow Euphorbia characias in large patio containers of loam-based compost such as John Innes No.3, which can be moved to a sheltered position over winter.

Water Euphorbia characias plants regularly until fully established. Once established, they are drought tolerant. In summer, cut back faded Euphorbia flower stems to the base to make way for new growth which will flower the following year. Make sure you wear gloves to protect skin from the irritating milky sap. In areas with extreme winters, Mediterranean Spurge is best given some winter protection with horticultural fleece. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Large established clumps of Euphorbia characias can be lifted and divided in early spring.
